The very best shuckers from every restaurant, raw bar, shellfish, and seafood company on the Eastern Seaboard are being challenged to compete in the 5th Annual “Mohegan Sun Oyster Open!”
For over a hundred years, up and down the eastern seaboard, oyster shucking competitions have pitted the best in the industry against each other in humble but fun shucking contests; just like the one that began at the East Coast Grill which set Cambridge and Boston restaurants against each other to see who had the best raw bar staff. Well, much has changed and today it has grown into a regional event for swift shuckers to be rewarded with cash prizes, promote their trade brands, and earn huge bragging rights. The competition not only focuses on individuals competing but also the operations that they shuck for! Share the camaraderie and competitive nature of the:
“Mohegan Sun Oyster Open”
Where: Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort, Uncasville, Connecticut in the Convention Center’s Uncas Ballroom
When: Sunday, January 20th at 4:30 p.m. on the Main Stage at the Sun WineFest
Sun WineFest has been a huge success with nearly 12,000 attendees each year and lots of media attention. This year the weekend will host over 100 Wine & Food Exhibitors, Celebrity Chefs, Wine Experts, Cooking Demonstrations, Evening Charity Events and the Mohegan Sun Oyster Open!
To qualify for the “Mohegan Sun Oyster Open”, a shucker must be able to open 15 oysters in less than 3 minutes. Limited to 16 competitors and 2-3 alternates, all applications must be received by January 2, 2008. If your application is accepted, you will be notified by January 4th. Winners of major competitions such as Newport, St. Mary’s, PEI, or Wellfleet that reside in New England automatically qualify for the Sun WineFest Oyster Open competition. However, such winners must still fill out an application. This competition models the international shucking rules and regulations* identifying winners by combining time and shucking quality (*as defined at the International Oyster Opening Contest in Galway, Ireland).
The first-place winner receives $3,500 cash and a champion trophy belt! In addition, the winner will be invited to compete in the Mohegan Sun Oyster Open held at the Taste of Mystic in Mystic, CT in September 2008 which includes travel arrangements, a two-night stay at the breathtaking Four Diamond Hotel at Mohegan Sun and a lobster & oyster feast at Jasper White’s Summer Shack. The second-place winner will receive $1,000 cash and a trophy plaque. The third-place winner will receive $500 cash and a trophy plaque.
